Costa Rica is a deep sea angling paradise for sailfish, marlin, tuna, mahi, wahoo, rooster fish, snook and many others. Whether it is inshore or offshore, Quepos, is the heart of big game sport fishing. With over 7000 billfish landed annually, Quepos should be your destination of choice. In addition to being billfish central, Manuel Antonio National Park (ten minutes away) is Costa Rica’s number one tourist attraction. Here is a rundown of the species available and the best seasons for each.

Sailfish are by far the most abundant of the billfish in the Quepos waters. These aerial acrobats will put on a show that you won't soon forget. It is not uncommon during the peak season to see boats that have 15 fish days ( 15 legal releases because all billfish must be released ). The peak season for sails is mid Dec. through mid March. Though not as abundant during the green season sails are always present in our waters with 10 fish days happening almost every month of the year. For those of you searching for record fish, the sails in our waters are huge, with 120 lb. fish being common.

Marlin are the second most populous attraction in our waters. Blue marlin, black marlin and striped marlin are all caught here with the peak season being April-May and again Sept.-Oct. Blues and blacks exceeding 800 pounds have been caught here.

Yellowfin Tuna   Available most of the year. The peak season for the giants ( those over 150 pounds) is August through Oct. Every year several in the 300lb range are hooked and battled.

Dorado, Mahi-Mahi, or Dolphin fish are all the same fish by a different name. The peak season for these tasty scrappers is concurrent with the peak for sailfish. During Jan., Feb. it is not uncommon to see 50-60lb. fish and at times schools on the surface that are acres wide. Though always available, for a sure thing be here in Feb.

Wahoo  The speed demons of the deep. These rockets are some of the finest eating available. June through August is the best time to be in Quepos to catch numbers of wahoo with double digit days being common. Average wahoo run 20-30lbs. and 60 pounders are not uncommon.

Rooster fish, snook, jack crevalle, cubera snapper, tripletail, grouper and Spanish mackerel are the inshore species and all are available to the angler year-around. Other than days following giant rains, the inshore fishing is always spectacular. Plan on spending at least a half day fishing for these species.

The charter boats that are available range from 44ft to 21ft pangas. Here is the selection of boats.
